No mystery connection, but the news that Sam Maloof, the designer and maker of the world's finest furniture -- like the gorgeous rocking chair shown here -- has died at 93. I met Maloof when I went out to his splendid home/workshop in Pomona to do a story after he won a MacArthur Award, and we became friends. Sam, I'm so sorry that I didn't take you up on your generous offer of a beautiful music stand for a few hundred bucks. They are worth a fortune these days.
